General Technical Information

Scyon™ Secura™ interior flooring

What is it?

A heavy-duty but lightweight structural flooring substrate that does double duty – it can be easily used for tile, vinyl and carpet  finishes over timber or steel floor joists in both residential general interiors and wet areas. Simple and fast to install, Scyon™ Secura™ interior flooring is the easiest way to get top protection against moisture damage in all interior floors.

Where do you use it?

As a substrate for direct fixing of tiles, vinyl and carpet in residential floors and wet areas, as an alternative to particle board, plywood or compressed fibre cement.

What are the key benefits?

SPEED. Secura™ interior flooring is 15% lighter per square metre than conventional 15mm compressed fibre cement, which makes it easier to handle. And because it’s made from Scyon™ material, which can be gun nailed and is easy to cut like timber, there’s no need for pre-drilling and screwing. All told it can be up to 40% faster to install than compressed.

NO FUSS. The 19mm tongue and groove joining means it’s compatible with other 19mm flooring products and eliminates the need for timber trimmers along the tongue and groove joint. The moisture-resistant sealer on all sides combined with the moisture-resistant properties of the Scyon™ material removes the need for full floor waterproofing outside enclosed shower areas. And unlike some timber products, tiles and vinyl can be directly fixed without the need for an underlay sheet.

SECURITY. Secura™ interior flooring is resistant to damage from moisture, so if rain holds you up during construction and the roof’s not yet on, the product won’t need replacing or sanding because it’s warped and twisted, like some timber products 1. This resistance to moisture damage also means that if there is a waterproofing failure some time in the future, then the Secura™ interior flooring will continue to perform, even if it gets wet. The strong, no-squeak feel of Secura™ interior flooring also gives a solid impression without the weight and cost of concrete. Secura™ interior flooring has a 10-year product warranty when installed and maintained correctly.

FAQ for Scyon™ Secura™ interior flooring

You say it’s gun nailable. But what if I like to use screws?

You still can, using a HardiDrive® screw or Nº 8 x 40mm Corrosion resistant self embedding head for screwing sheets to timber. Screws don’t need to be pre-drilled.

You say it’s easy to cut – like timber. Do I need special equipment?

We only recommend the HardiBlade® saw blade because its diamond tips produce larger dust particles to help reduce the risk of respirable silica. Never use a carbide framing blade or continuous rim diamond blade.

I’m nervous about not waterproofing outside enclosed shower areas. Can you reassure me?

Scyon Secura interior flooring has been appraised by CSIRO as satisfying the relevant requirements for use in wet areas as a substitute for compressed fibre cement
It is a suitable and equivalent substrate to that of compressed fibre cement sheet, as set out in Tables 2.1 and 4.1 of AS 3740-2004, in that it is a water resistant product for use as a waterproofing system for wet areas including shower recess bases and associated floors which are to be subsequently tiled when the conditions listed in CSIRO Appraisals Technical Assessment 318 are fulfilled

You say it has the performance of compressed without the back ache. Why fix what’s not broken?

Field trials demonstrate that installing Secura is up to 40% faster than installing compressed sheets of an equivalent or even larger size.

I do a lot of renovations with 600mm centres not 450mm. Does this product work on 600 centres?

The product can’t be used on 600mm centres

You only offer one size 2,700 x 600. Won’t I still need the1,800 x 900?
Builders we surveyed comment that:

“2700x600mm is ideal for 450mm joist centres.”

“The 1800x900 sheet doesn’t fit with bathrooms that are 2000 wide which is common.”

“If I’m using it in the wet area and butting it up to yellow tongue, then the 2700x600 sheet would make it easier for the installers to keep it straight.”

“2700x600 is a spot on size for all interiors, but while there may be a little more waste in some small bathrooms, we would use the off cuts there.”

“2700x600 size would be better for bathrooms, as my average bathroom size is bigger than 1800x900.”
